General Information

The filtration system uses the pressure at the bottom of the tank to force water through a filter (light blue cylinder).  The water is then pumped back into the top of the tank with a small magnetically driven pump.  All connections are plastic-to-plastic or plastic-to-metal, and therefore require teflon tape.  More water in the tank allows for higher pressure at the bottom and forces more water through the system.  The pump is rated for continuous use and should therefore be left on whenever possible.

All parts were purchased from Mcmaster.  The pipe size for every part is .5''.  This is an industry standard and does NOT mean that the ID or OD is .5''.  Therefore, when buying replacement  parts care should be taken to ensure that everything is compatible with .5'' pipe size.

Changing the Filter

Changing the filter is very easy.  First close the metal valve between the tank and the filter.  Continue pumping for several second until water is no longer entering the tank.  Shut off the pump by unplugging it.  Then loosen the hose clamps and remove the hose from both sides of the filter.  Unscrew the top of the filter, remove the old cartridge and drop the new one in.  Replace the top, hoses, and clamps.  Switch on the pump and open the valve.

The replacement cartridge is Mcmaster part number 4422k61.

Other Considerations

Future projects:  Do we want to install a flow meter or a water quality indicator light?  These will make it easier to tell when the cartridge needs to be replaced.

<<It is important to prevent light from entering the tank in order to prevent the growth of algae.>>
